Nick Fushi connected on a grand slam for the Chaparrals, but it wasn’t enough as they dropped the opener of Wednesday’s doubleheader at College of Lake County, 16-7.
In the second game, the Chaps outhit the Lancers, 8-4, but couldn’t build momentum from Jack Oberli’s two-run homer in the first inning in a 6-4 loss.
COD, now 5-10 overall, is at Region 4 power South Suburban on Friday for a nine-inning game, and plays a doubleheader Saturday at Kankakee.
Game 1: Lake County 16, Chaps 7
After the Chaps took a 5-0 in the first, the Lancers answered back with a six-run effort of their own in the bottom of the inning. The hosts took control with a three-run fourth and the lead held.
Seth Borden had two RBI, while Jimmy Heintz added a double. The Lancers collected six home runs in the win.
Game 2: Lake County 6, Chaps 4
Oberli’s two-run shot in the first and a pair of bases-loaded walks accounted for the Chaps, who couldn’t capitalize on their scoring. Zion Baker and Giovanni Lopez each had two hits and Anthony Perez’s double to lead off the second keyed the Chaps’ attack.
On the mound, Cliff Vickers and Borden had two strikeouts apiece in relief of starter Zak Fisher.
